The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of North Carolina, including Rowan and Cabarrus counties and points eastward. According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin falling over the Piedmont this evening, changing to snow by 10 p.m.[1]

Construction costs for Cabarrus County's two newest schools are well under budget, but the savings are unlikely to translate into more money for the schools.[2]

Snow is expected continue through the nighttime hours, ending by 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. In our area, snow accumulations of three to five inches are possible. [1]

Cox Mill High School, scheduled to open in August, is more than $5million under budget. The new Hickory Ridge Middle School, planned to open in 2010, is already more than $500,000 under its projected cost.[2]

Tonight's low temperature is expected to be in the mid-20s. Temperatures tomorrow aren't expected to go far above freezing.[1]

Sam Masters, construction director for the Cabarrus County Schools, said building conditions are unlike any he has seen in 20 years in the business.[2]

The N.C. Department of Transportation is already preparing for the winter weather. Trucks were spraying salt solution onto Interstate 85 earlier this afternoon.[1]

The county paid less than $400,000 to grade the land for Hickory Ridge Middle. It originally budgeted more than $900,000. Masters said the county had more than 20 bidders for that project. Most projects have fewer than 10. But the favorable conditions won't move up construction of more schools, he said. The school system has five major projects coming up, but bids for those projects are not expected until March or April.[2]

As of 5 p.m., no information on closings or delays had been released by the Rowan-Salisbury School System, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, Kannapolis City Schools or Cabarrus County Schools.[1]

Two new elementary schools are scheduled to open in 2010, but grading has not begun on those sites. Classroom additions for Furr Elementary and Boger Elementary also are planned, along with a new northwestern middle school.[2]

On the episode of Kitchen Nightmares this week, Café 36 is in serious danger of being kicked out. Chef Gordon Ramsay travels to La Grange, Il, hoping to turn around the struggling café.

Terry and Caro, loving husband and wife, own and run Café 36. Although Terry had very little restaurant-running experience, he still bought the upscale French/American Bistro two years before. The challenge has proven to be more difficult than he initially expected.

The challenge that Café 36 is faced with is a lack of clientele and maintaining quality control. The restaurant has unfortunately been suffering from loss of money, so there is a risk that it would have to close forever.

C.J. Spiller decided to go back to Clemson

C.J. Spiller said today he would return for his final season of eligibility at Clemson University rather than enter the NFL Draft.

Spiller, a junior from Lake Butler, Fla., took the decision to the wire. The NFL deadline is midnight tonight.

One of the most electric offensive players in Clemson history, Spiller was projected as a late first round or early second round pick.

He holds Clemson records for career all-purpose yardage (4,885) and has scored 30 touchdowns, 12 on plays of 50 yards or more including two kickoff returns.

Spiller has rushed for 2,335 yards in three seasons, caught passes for 915 yards and in 2008 passed for a touchdown.

He was named all-conference first team after leading the ACC in all-purpose yards. Also he was second in kick returns and third in punt returns.

A member of the Clemson track team, Spiller was All-American indoors at 60 meters and has run 100 meters in 10.29 seconds.

Recently he was honored as the team’s most valuable offensive player, as first-team Strength All-American and co-recipient of the Vickery Hall Award for academics.

Hudson River Swallowed US Airways Plane

A US Airways flight from LaGuardia Airport in New York went down in the Hudson River this afternoon with 155 passengers and crew on board, and rescuers moved quickly to remove everyone from the plane as it gradually settled into the frigid water.

Authorities said there were no fatalities and that all aboard got off safely.

Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, appeared to make a controlled landing in the water shortly after takeoff from New York bound for Charlotte, N.C.

Television news footage showed the aircraft resting apparently intact in the water as ferries and rescue vessels surrounded it and helicopters flew overhead.

Inflatable boats were deployed to carry passengers from the plane to the nearby vessels.

A spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, Laura Brown, said, "My understanding is that everyone is alive. I don't know if there are any serious injuries or not."

Brown said the plane appeared to have hit one or more birds on takeoff. Initial accounts indicated the airliner lost both engines.

"We understand there were eyewitness reports that the plane might have flown into a flock of birds," Brown said.

But Ellen Howe, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, confirmed only that there was "no known nexus to terrorism" in the downing.

A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, Laura Keehner said, "There is no information at this time to indicate that this is a security-related incident. We continue to closely monitor the situation, which at present is focused on search and rescue."

Alberto Panero, a passenger on the plane, told CNN in a telephone interview that everyone on the plane was "pretty much okay" after the impact.

"This was a near-death experience that thankfully did not turn out that way," he said.
